SAM.gov (System for Award Management)

What is SAM.gov? A one-stop website and resource for all open market federal business opportunities over $25,000.

SAM.gov is a free website run by the federal government where small businesses can register to do business with the U.S. government and search for various assistance programs and contract opportunities. All federal agencies (both military and civilian) search the sam.gov database for companies that can do business with local, state, and federal governments. There is also a search function so your company can identify potential opportunities in your industry.

The first step to creating a SAM.gov account is to request a DUNS number from Dun & Bradstreet. The DUNS number is a unique worldwide business identification system that identifies and validates businesses. (Please note that after April 2022, the SAM.gov site will no longer require a DUNS number.)

It can take a couple of days to get the DUNS number, so while you are waiting, go to the SAM.gov Registration page and start collecting the documentation and information listed there.

Once your company is registered, you can search for federal contract opportunities and sign up to be notified of new opportunities in your industry. While there is paperwork and process involved, registering at SAM.gov can open up new opportunities for your small business.
