How to Contract with Local Governments
Just like at the federal and state level, local government can be a potential customer for small businesses. The key is making sure you understand the process for bidding on RFPs (request for proposal) and having all your business-related paperwork and documents in good shape. Each locality handles the contracting and bidding process differently; however, many have websites where companies pre-register with pertinent details and/or to get notifications when RFPs are released. For the geographic area covered by the RRSBDC, here are some helpful links:
The City of Roanoke Purchasing department has links for current bids and RFP requests, and a Vendor Self Service page where companies can pre-register to do business with the City.
Roanoke County Purchasing also has online resources for small businesses, including a list of current bid opportunities and a place to sign up to get notifications about new RFPs.
The Botetourt County purchasing department has some online resources and also uses the state-wide eVA service for all solicitations over $30,000 and for some smaller RFPs.
Other localities in our service area also have purchasing departments, including:
Floyd County purchasing, including vendor registration and open opportunities
Franklin County procurement, search for opportunities and sign up to get notifications about new opportunities.
